Kings and Queens: Let’s Talk Types of Dental Crowns
Types of Dental Crowns: Which is the Best Option for You?
At Northview Family Dental, we understand that every patient is unique, and therefore, every treatment should be tailored to meet their specific needs. One of the most common treatments we offer is the placement of dental crowns. But did you know that there are different types of dental crowns available? Here, we’ll explain the various options and help you determine which might be the best fit for your situation.
1. Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia crowns are made from a very strong material that is resistant to wear and fractures. They can be made entirely of zirconia or can have a porcelain layer on top for a more natural appearance. Zirconia crowns are ideal for patients who need extra strength, especially for back teeth, and for those who want a crown that blends well with their natural teeth.
2. Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine the best of both worlds: the strength of metal and the natural look of porcelain. These crowns have a metal structure covered by a layer of porcelain, offering durability and a more natural appearance. While they are strong, the metal base can sometimes show through the porcelain, especially near the gum line, which may be a consideration for some patients.
These can be considered when there is not enough space for a zirconia crown. We will let you know if this is the case and that some metal might show through.
3. Gold Crowns
While gold crowns may not be widely used today, they are known for their durability and strength. Gold crowns are often used for molars, where the appearance is less of a concern. While they don’t match the natural color of teeth, many patients choose gold for its reliability.
How to Choose the Right Crown for You
Choosing the right type of dental crown depends on several factors, including the location of the tooth, the amount of natural tooth remaining, your budget, and your aesthetic preferences.
